It is a fact that within the EU it is estimated that 8-9 million tonnes of ELV waste is produced each year. This waste has to be managed properly as every vehicle is potentially harmful to the environment. Every ELV has now to disposed of under a set of new EU regulations, EU directive 2000/53/EC.
This document states that when a vehicle has reached the end of its life it is no longer to be simply dismantled and processed, but has to be depolluted first. Depollution is the removal of the fuel and other fluids from End of Life Vehicles (ELV's). all fluids have to be removed in order to prevent environmental damage and risk to health.
Fluid such as petrol is potentially very dangerous to remove and store, so special equipment has to be designed and manufactured to prevent accidents.
